Picking your DJ name

Picking your DJ name is great fun but can also be quite daunting for some. If you’ve never had an alter ego when you were younger with a spin-off DJ name then you’ll need to get your thinking cap on!

We’ve put together a list of a few of our faves from previous Stick It On nights and come up with some foolproof ways to help you think of yours.

After trawling the internet we have found some worth giving a go. If you have a couple of minutes spare and want to answer questions about life then try this one.  BBC Radio 1Xtra has also come up with a DJ name generator for you to try.

More importantly, don’t stress about it too much. Stick It On is all about having fun! To find a less serious one try this DJ name generator here.

Or you could start it off with either MC/DJ, the first two initials of your name and the last thing you ate. For example, mine would be MC YS-Quiche… Okay, maybe that doesn’t really work out too well.

If you’re still stuck then Buzzfeed has generated a DJ name quiz that’s just a few clicks away.

But whatever you choose just remember to tear up those decks and have a great time!

Choosing your DJ set

Choosing your DJ set is the most important part of preparing for any Stick It On party. Initially, you might think it’s easy, you’ll just stick three great songs down and that’s that. But will the songs you choose fit the event you’re attending? Do the three songs work well together as one set? How do you pick just three songs from the countless hundreds that you love?

What three Choons will you pick?

Once you start to think about choosing your DJ set you’ll realise it takes quite a bit of thought. You may love Enya’s Sail Away, but will it suit a club night? We know from experience that people who agonise over what to play are the people that really get it. Have a dozen or so songs in mind to whittle down to a final three. A three-song set needs to flow – two up-tempo electro songs followed by a slow acoustic track is going to sound strange. It will also break up the rhythm on the dancefloor. However, a chilled out number flowing into a mid-tempo tune finished off by a high energy anthem will work. That, ladies and gentlemen, is how DJs build their sets.

Stick It On’s DJ Face Off

You’ll know in advance the type of night you’ll be attending and can make safe assumptions about what the atmosphere will be like. Use that as your starting point for choosing your DJ set, and ideas for the right songs will soon follow. You’ll probably change your mind and start again, get frustrated and have your mind go blank – but when you settle on your set, play it and the dancefloor responds it will have all been worthwhile.

Stick It On was born in the year 2000.

Originally a club night in Brighton, the idea came from a simple love of playing a wide range of great music and seeing the positive reactions a great song can bring.

Founder Rob Drysdale is a music lover and rebelled against being pigeon-holed into playing just one genre. To him, there are only two types of music; good and bad.

Rob was only interested in the good stuff! And that certainly reflected on night. Click here to read some press releases from Stick It On’s early club days.

Behind the decks with Stick It On at The King & Queen

Rob played everything from pubs, small club nights and house parties, but what was clear to him was how much fun it is getting behind the decks and playing music to people.

The feeling of sharing this and rebelling against the ‘Superstar DJ’ phenomenon of the time inspired Rob to team up with friend and fellow promoter Karim Bouzidi. Together, they hosted their first club night, essentially to a group of friends – the beginning of Stick It On…

So you’re going to a Stick It On night?

If you didn’t already know, Stick It On is well and truly opening it’s arms back to the good old days and hosting a night at The Richmond Friday 24th May.

For those of you unfamiliar to the concept of Stick It On, or just not 100% sure what you’re doing – I thought I’d write this short piece outlining our concept and the do’s and don’ts of a Stick It On party.

First things first, you absolutely don’t have to have any DJ experience, mixing is actively discouraged, we’re not expecting you to be the new Fatboy Slim behind the decks. What we do want is 3 banging choons that you would want to hear on a night out and that other people would also enjoy! A bizarre b-sidetrack from a band that no one, literally no one, has heard of might not go down as well as you’d think. Stick It On is all about having fun in front and behind the decks so it’s best to keep that in mind when choosing your set.

If nerves get the best of you then why not do a set with a friend?! Or up to a group of 3? Each of you can pick a song each and help each other to rock the dancefloor!
